چکیده

It can be very difficult to create software systems which capture the knowledge of an expert. It is an expensive and laborious process that often results in a suboptimal solution. This article proposes an approach which is different from ’manual’ knowledge construction. The described system is relevant and usable for the end user, from the beginning of its development. It is continuously being trained by the experts while they are using it. This paper shows an example and explains how the computer learns from the experts. In order to provide a general mechanism, the principle of learning to learn is proposed and applied to the problem of handwriting recognition. The study pays attention to the development of the hypotheses that the developing system uses as it adapts to feedback it receives from its own actions on itself, on objects, on the users of the system and the reflection on this feedback. The ultimate goal is the creation of a system that learns to ’google’ through handwritten documents, starting from scratch with a pile of raw images.

Building Machines That Learn and Think Like People

Recent progress in artificial intelligence has renewed interest in building systems that learn and think like people. Many advances have come from using deep neural networks trained end-to-end in tasks such as object recognition, video games, and board games, achieving performance that equals or even beats that of humans in some respects. Despite their biological inspiration and performance ach...

Face Recognition by Cognitive Discriminant Features

Face recognition is still an active pattern analysis topic. Faces have already been treated as objects or textures, but human face recognition system takes a different approach in face recognition. People refer to faces by their most discriminant features. People usually describe faces in sentences like ``She's snub-nosed'' or ``he's got long nose'' or ``he's got round eyes'' and so like. These...

Cognitive Aspects of Teacher Expertise in ELT

The present paper seeks to investigate the cognitive abilities of expert EFL teachers. To this aim, the existing literature was examined and ten cognitive themes were derived which were further investigated through interviews conducted with ten academics, teacher trainers and exemplary teachers of the field in the Iranian context. The ten extracted themes were attested by interviewees’ comments...

Early-Life Stress Triggers Juvenile Zebra Finches to Switch Social Learning Strategies

Stress during early life can cause disease and cognitive impairment in humans and non-humans alike. However, stress and other environmental factors can also program developmental pathways. We investigate whether differential exposure to developmental stress can drive divergent social learning strategies between siblings. In many species, juveniles acquire essential foraging skills by copying ot...

Combining pattern recognition and deep-learning-based algorithms to automatically detect commercial quadcopters using audio signals (Research Article)

Commercial quadcopters with many private, commercial, and public sector applications are a rapidly advancing technology. Currently, there is no guarantee to facilitate the safe operation of these devices in the community. Three different automatic commercial quadcopters identification methods are presented in this paper. Among these three techniques, two are based on deep neural networks in whi...

More gestures than answers: children learning about balance.

This research extends the range of domains within which children's gestures are found to play an important role in learning. The study involves children learning about balance, and the authors locate children's gestures within a relevant model of cognitive development--the representational redescription model (A. Karmiloff-Smith, 1992). The speech and gestures of children explaining a balance t...
